The Exotic Persian is a hybrid Persian first produced in the early 1960s.  They were formally recognized by the CFA (Cat Fanciers Association) in 1967.  They are now the #3 favorite of all cat breeds in the USA, the traditional Persian being #1.

The Exotic is sometimes referred to as the "lazy man's Persian".  The Shorthair Persian or Exotic Shorthair Persian (ESH)  has the same body and head type as a traditional Persian, but due to its plush shorter fur it does not require the frequent brushing that a traditional Persian does.

Occasionally Exotic Shorthairs will produce longhaired kittens as well.  The long hair gene is recessive and can never fully be bred out since the breed began with Persians.  These Exotic Longhair Persians (ELH) are physically identical to a traditional Persian, but have the sweeter, more playful personality of the Exotic Shorthair Persian. They also love to sit in a lap.

Exotics can be any color or pattern found in traditional Persians, as well as the colorpoint varieties (Himalayan), as both the Exotic and Himalayan are hybrid Persians.

The Exotic Shorthair does not need to be groomed as often as a traditional Persian, but it does shed and should be groomed weekly; whereas tradtional Persians do better with daily grooming.

Exotics typically keep their tail straight up, as other breeds, can hold their tail curved over their back. There tails are thick.  Other shorthairs can have slender tails and a traditional Persian's tail is fluffy.

Exotic Persians tend to have a gentle and affectionate personality and are quite intelligent.   This breed is curious. They are more adventurous than their longhaired ancestors.  This breed is the ultimate lap cat!!!  The Persian flat, round face combined with thick plush fur is too cute to resist!!!!   They can live to be 15 years or more.

Traditional Persians

The Himalayan is a colorpoint Persian hybrid created by crossing Persians and Siamese.  Himalayans, like traditional Persians, tend to have a round (cobby) body with short legs, which makes it harder for them to jump as high as other cats do.

Himalayans are sweet-tempered, intelligent and generally very social and devoted companions. They possess a playful side as well.   Their beautiful colorpoint pattern produces a stunning cat.

When and where they first appeared can be dated back to the hieroglyphics age of 1684 B.C.   It is believed they were smuggled along with spices and jewels out of Persia. This breed has been #1 since the CFA first started keeping records in 1871. Persians are affectionate and loyal but need their long fur groomed every day.

A Persian, with proper care, can live with their family for an average of fifteen to twenty years!

There are variations of the face of Persians and this applies to their Exotic and Himalayan hybrid variety as well, and each Persian variety can produce all face types in any given litter of kittens. The show quality face has the extreme face with little to no break in the nose, the very flat-face. Show quality Persians have long, thick coats, stout legs, a broad head with the ears set far apart. They are petite in size, with large round eyes. The breeder/pet quality face, also known as a doll-face, has a bit more of a nose and still has a rounded head. Their ears are typically a bit larger than that of a show quality Persian.  Then there are "moderate-faced" Persians who have a bit more nose than a show quality Persian but not as long as a doll-faced.  Females in this mid-range are a good breeder quality.
